Types of Car Hoists

January 6th, 2012 admin Comments off

A car hoist is a machine that is most often used in mechanics’ shops to lift a car up easily. That way the mechanic can take a clear and easy look under the car to determine problems. One of the most common reasons to do this is for your car’s fluid changes, tire balancing and changing, and, as well as that, alignment can be done while the car is supported by a hoist.

There are several different types of car hoists for different vehicles. Most two post lifts have the lifting capacity of at least 3 tons, but for many American made cars and trucks, that just isn’t enough. Two post car hoists, such as the Mascot 3311, come equipped with a sophisticated system to prevent nut breakage, an emergency chain breakage system, and an internal locking system that immediately releases when the lift is in the lowered position.

The two-post hoist has the necessary power to do most jobs required by the mechanic. That extreme lifting power is thanks to the two hydraulically powered columns, or posts, that give the extra oomph needed to allow the car hoist to raise and lower the car or truck safely.

The more powerful and safer four-pole car hoist is the most popular type of hoist seen in American repair shops today. As implied, the lift is made of four hydraulic posts, one at each of the four corners of the lift, giving the four-pole hoist the most lifting power and stability possible. To utilize this type of lifting equipment the car or truck is driven full up and on to the lift rails. It takes careful driving, because if the car isn’t lined up just right on the lift, it could be disastrous. The car could flip sideways as it lifts, or even worse, slip out while work is being done underneath severely injuring someone, perhaps a customer!

There is also the popular, but smaller, scissors style car hoist. This is the type of hoist that car shops use to perform fluid checks and changes. These scissors type lifts are efficient at getting tires off so they can be changed in automatic tire changers, or quickly balanced on an automatic wheel balancer.

Scissor hoists are giant versions of those small tire jacks we get with a new car, except 10 times the size and much easier to use. Hydraulic scissor hoists can support just as much weight as the two-post hoist as it takes considerably less room if you are cramped for space in your current garage. They come in sets of two and have multiple safety features that keep the car and those working on it safe. These features include a double master slave system that ensures the two lifts will rise evenly and won’t tilt one way or the other.
